One Response to Trump’s Tariffs: Trade That Excludes the U.S.

As President Trump this weekend opened what could become a global trade war, a growing number of countries, including America’s closest allies, are forging their own economic partnerships without the United States. If Washington is putting up a higher fence around its trade, other nations are lowering theirs.

In just the last two months, the European Union concluded three new trade deals.

The bloc, completing negotiations that started 25 years ago, reached a major agreement with four South American countries in December to create one of the world’s largest trade zones, linking markets with 850 million people.
Two weeks later, the European Union struck a deal with Switzerland. Then last month, the bloc bolstered trade arrangements with Mexico. It also resumed talks, after a 13-year postponement, on a free-trade agreement with Malaysia.

“With Europe, what you see is what you get,” the European Commission president, Ursula Von der Leyen, boasted to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “We play by the rules. Our deals have no hidden strings attached.”

The adults in the room would rather not have to deal with trump's juvenile, performative politics.

The EU already has huge tariffs on everything they import, including on the US.

For example, they have a 10% tariff on US vehicles.

Copied from another board..........

The following are all quotes from Reagan on tariffs, trade agreements, trade deficits, and trade wars

“Our peaceful trading partners are not our enemies; they are our allies. We should beware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends — weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world — all while cynically waving the American flag.
”

“There are some who seem to believe that we should run up the American flag in defense of our markets. They would embrace protectionism again and insulate our markets from world competition. Well, the last time the United States tried that, there was enormous economic distress in the world”

“Over the past 200 years, not only has the argument against tariffs and trade barriers won nearly universal agreement among economists but it has also proven itself in the real world, where we have seen free-trading nations prosper while protectionist countries fall behind”

“America's most recent experiment with protectionism was a disaster for the working men and women of this country. When Congress passed the Smoot-Hawley tariff in 1930, we were told that it would protect America from foreign competition and save jobs in this country—the same line we hear today. The actual result was the Great Depression”

“We too often talk about trade while using the vocabulary of war. In war, for one side to win, the other must lose. But commerce is not warfare. Trade is an economic alliance that benefits both countries. There are no losers, only winners. And trade helps strengthen the free world”

“Trade deficits and inflows of foreign capital are not necessarily a sign of an economy’s weakness. During the first 100 years of our nation’s history, while we were developing from an agricultural colony to the industrial leader of the world, the United States ran a trade deficit. And now, as we’re leading a global movement from the industrial age to the information age, we continue to attract investment from around the world”

“The balance of trade has become a very emotional issue; some claim our trade deficit has cost us millions of jobs. Congress is awash in bills calling for trade sanctions and retaliation. But look at the facts: In 1980 we had a trade surplus, and about 99 million Americans had jobs. Today we have a trade deficit, and almost 107 million Americans are working. Despite a growing trade deficit, we've gained over 71/2 million new jobs since 1980. Our free, open, and growing economy has put more Americans to work in 1985 than ever before in our history”

“The United States, which has been the engine keeping the world economy moving forward, has a trade deficit because our growing economy enables us to buy their goods.

Over time, however, these imbalances should be reduced, and there are two ways to do it: We can become more like them, or they can become more like us. We can raise taxes, reregulate our economy, and adopt protectionist legislation of the kind now being considered in Congress. That will effectively slow growth in this nation and stifle international trade. We won’t be able to buy their goods and, certainly, no one will want to invest in the United States”

Wow, they want to maintain the trade imbalance!

OP does not want manufacturing in the US. HE WANTS TO EXPLOIT CHEAP LABOR OVERSEAS AND POLLITE.

DUMB SHIT.

So they think they can replace trade with the USA with Argentina? Too funny! :auiqs.jpg:

Must be why they only pay a fraction of that owed to belong to NATO and the UN, and owe us trillions of dollars in unfair trade! :auiqs.jpg:

As usual, butthole doesn't care what is good for the USA and only worries what may be good or bad for our "allies."
Allies who are only friendly when we are bending over kissing their asses.

Neither they nor the US should have let things get the way they have gotten. Has nothing to do with Trump. It is about Wall Street and mega corporations taking advantage to the point they are more powerful than governments. This trade war needs to happen and the end results needs to be a more thoughtful trade policy that allows us access to bananas while protecting developing nations' agricultural industries from being run asunder by Archer Daniels Midland.

Unfortunately, there’s not much protection from Trump’s reckless, irresponsible, and unwarranted trade wars.

You can't Trump proof anything.

Trade is something as old as humanity itself.

"I have what you need, I have more of it than you. If you don't do what I want, I'll give it to someone else"

Wait, I thought you guys said tariffs on other nations’ goods just raise prices for American consumers.

Why don’t they just tell their citizens, “kein Problem! The Americaner vill pay, nicht uns! Blah-ha-ha-ha!”

It's a long four years for US Lefties, and it's beginning to feel a long for years for the planet. Talk about ruffling feathers. One thing is for sure, Trump has never written a book, "How to make friends", and he shouldn't try either.

I sense more and more eyes are beginning to roll.

If tariffs were effective, nobody would be opposing what Trump is doing. It's time to stop worshipping this idiot.
Democrats ALWAYS oppose anything effective because their goals are not the goals of normal Americans.
