I've been searching about this & can't find 2 stories in reasonable agreement. But he was a college student at U. Virginia. One article says he was studying in Hong Kong & signed up with a tour company to spend 5 days in NK. Another article doesn't mention Hong Kong.
According to his confession in NK court, he had stolen the banner because of the group Z and had been urged to steal it by a member of a religious group......but both religious group & the Z college group say he was NOT a member or that they knew of him.

Since the information about why he was there in the first place is so sketchy & conflicting......only makes it suspicious. It's just crazy & very tragic
