Oregon environmental regulators are failing to keep up on air pollution permit renewals, potentially endangering the public’s health, according to a state audit released Wednesday.
The Secretary of State’s office said that 43 percent of the “largest and most complex federal and state air quality permit renewals are overdue for renewal.” In addition, auditors found that the Department of Environmental Quality was often behind on compliance inspections.
"Outdated permits increase the risk that permitted facilities are not operating according to the latest air quality standards and rules," the report said. "When inspections are not completed on time, the risk increases that violations go undetected."
At the same time, businesses were losing faith in the agency, according to auditors, who noted that "the permit and inspection backlog has increased tensions with businesses and eroded their confidence in DEQ’s ability to effectively manage air quality permits."
