Opportunity, Responsibility, Community

Looking at Joe Klein's less than flattering "Exposé" of Bill Clinton from over a decade ago, I was struck by these three words Clinton used on the side of his tour Bus and how they have such a different meaning for Republicans.

Bill Clinton: Third Way Principles: opportunity, responsibility, community

In his 1998 State of the Union speech, he recited the three principles of The Third Way: opportunity, responsibility and community--words that Clinton had made the slogan of the moderate Democratic Leadership Council when he became its chairman in 1991. Ever since, politicians from Tony Blair in England to George W. Bush has used the same words to win elections; by 1998, however, the formulation was beginning to seem hackneyed. He made a last attempt to summarize his governing philosophy, offering a three-point "strategy for prosperity: fiscal discipline to cut interest rates and spur growth; investments in education and skills to prepare our people for the new economy; new markets for American products and American workers."
There was no applause The words were too abstract; there was nothing stirring or controversial about them. The Third Way--which challenged both liberal and conservative orthodoxies--could sound like Everyone's Way when massaged into platitudes by a decent speechwriter.

The GOP Version:

Opportunity - for the CREATORS. It's the job CREATORS who manage to create jobs without any nod to the ridiculous left wing idea of "supply and demand". It's no coincidence they are called the "CREATORS". It is only they who deserve government support.

Responsibility - laughable - it's every man for himself. You get whatever you can. No one tells me what to do. I believe in doing what I want and I believe that might makes right and so I can tell others, like blacks, Hispanics, gays and women how they should live. The only responsibility we have is to pull every trick in the book to win elections. We have to protect the "CREATORS" and force people to live by what we imagine is our God's "laws".

Community - code for "Socialism" plain and simple. In my country of every man for himself, the only community I believe in is mine.

I know this will get right wingers to call all kinds of names. But it pretty much spells out their philosophy. The left doesn't need to make up bizarre right wing beliefs. Because they tell us what their beliefs are.

Third way democrats=Neocon republicans, the differences are so small as to be insignificant.

When you have one party that's 90% white and the other a coalition party made up of everyone else, making such a statement is laughable. Obviously, the differences are as huge as the difference between white and rainbow.

Not on economic issues. When everything pans out it's still Wall Street running the show..

Wow......rdean waited until post #4 before he threw race baiting into the thread.

That's a new record for him. ..

Bill had the opportunity for a blow job. He had the responsibility to say no. He disappointed the community.

Next point, please.

Of the (too) many rdean posts I have read this one actually has a dose of rationality. Congrats!
I don't know what Klein was attempting but many conservatives (and perhaps liberals) still believe in the principles Clinton expressed. In fact, they are only hackneyed because it is so difficult - if not downright impossible - to find an honest politician espousing them. You can tell most are lying because their lips are moving but I still believe Bill Clinton was sincere and I believe he acted on those beliefs.
"Fiscal discipline to cut interest rates and spur growth" - an always sound personal policy.
"Investments in education and skills to prepare our people for the new economy" - inclusion of all who want to be included in the American Dream.
"New markets for American products and American workers" - yeah ... that Global Economy thing.

Race baiting is calling Obama a "Kenyan".

Republicans at the GOP convention throwing peanuts at a black CNN camera woman and saying "this is how we feed the animals" is not race baiting, it's an attack.

Pointing out the GOP is 90% white and the Democrats are everyone else is not race baiting. It's a fact.

Do you understand the difference?

libs just love al these petty sayings that all just EMPTY WORDS

I mean they fell for this

I will stop the seas rising and heal the planet and right then they were hooked.... they saw Obama was a g-d, and tear were streaming down faces...they just had to vote the man who can stop the seas and save us all from drowning

our country is in so much trouble with the citizens voting today...in other words

I have noticed that rdean makes most of his bizarre posts early in the morning.

Which backs up my theory that he just 'dreams' this nonsense up while asleep at night. ..

Someone has to stir the pot here. It's a dirty job but someone has to do it.

I totally get why rightwingnuts refuse to commit themselves answering this type of question.

If they say the wrong thing, something too "helpful", the other rightwingnuts will call them out as socialist or against liberty.

If they say something to rightwingnutterywackadoodle, every one else will laugh at them and rightfully so.

So to get out of this terrible quandary, they do what pussies do, they deflect, call names and run off never answering the question.

What DB calls "empty words":

opportunity, responsibility, community

See? I told you.

See? Steph (DB) showed herself to be "rightwingnutterywackadoodle" but at least she stood firm and wasn't afraid to show everyone her "nutterydoodleness".

It would take a lot of typing to split that many hairs and they are being lazy this morning.
