Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was seen with a new tattoo earlier this week while visiting U.S. troops in Hawaii. And it's causing a stir among the Muslim community due to what some view as an implied message.

The Daily Beast reported Thursday that Hegseth first showed off the new tattoo on his left bicep when training with sailors at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickman on Tuesday. Hegseth's tattoo is known as a "kafir (كافر)," which translates to "infidel" or "disbeliever" in Arabic. Journalist Tam Hussein, who is Muslim, observed that the kafir tattoo is directly under his "Deus Vult" tattoo, which is a slogan from the Crusades that translates to "God wills it."

Sources said Hegseth first displayed the tattoo by removing a MAGA hat during a press briefing, revealing the words "Kill All Commies" prominently inked across his brow.
"Should Americans be worried about the message your new tattoo sends?" a reporter asked Hegseth. "On the surface, it would appear that you're in favor of killing all communists. Is that the case, Mr. Secretary?"
The Defense Secretary brushed off the question as yet another attempt by the media to paint him as an extremist.
"That is such a silly and irresponsible accusation," Hegseth said. "I don't understand how anyone could look at a tattoo that says 'Kill All Commies' and misconstrue that into thinking I'm in favor of killing all communists. More liberal media propaganda."
Hegseth had been at the center of a public relations firestorm following the scandal in which he and other Trump administration officials were found to have been discussing military actions in a Signal group chat, placing renewed scrutiny on his leadership. The new tattoo only served to increase criticism across the media and social media.
"'Kill All Commies?' Is this the man we want heading up our Department of Defense?" posted a Reddit Mod by the name of @neverbeentried1917 in r/columbia. "He's literally threatening the lives of our American comrades. Resign!"
