“The deer was shot in a church parking lot,” Stumbo actually used the church for some type of cover to get closer to the deer. He stood behind the building and shot the deer out of the parking lot, and the deer ran. He shot again, actually towards some houses, and the deer died in the creek.”

A 10K fine for poaching the "king's deer" seems excessive to me but it looks like he was fined under WV's new trophy penalties;

Any buck illegally killed in which the antler spread is 14-16 inches the fine is $2,500. A 16 to 18 inch spread mandates a $5,000 fine. Illegally killed bucks with a spread of 18 to 20 inches results in a $7,500 fine. A buck with more than a 20 inch spread on its rack commands a $10,000 fine. The changes which were enacted during the 2020 Regular Session of the Legislature took effect this year. The new rules also mandate the five year revocation of a convicted poachers hunting and fishing license.

Idiot, I hope they revoked his hinting privileges for at least 5 years too.

Why is WV soo tough on poaching deer? ... :dunno:
Because like most states they have come to realize the contribution hunting makes to their economy and particularly the actual value of large trophy racks.

People will pay 20,000 to 50,000 or more to shoot a trophy buck on private lands and Indian reservations.

Every trophy taken illegally is literally robbing the taxpayers of the state of a valuable animal.

Virtually every state spends millions of dollars a year to provide the best hunting and fishing sportsmen/women can find because they realize what an economic boon to ever state they provide when populations are well managed and controlled.

We had some guy here in Houston that jumped the fence at a wildlife sanctuary in Bear creek park and killed a large tame buck with a knife named Mr. Buck.
Needless to say he was enemy #1 in Houston.
