In some cases, when land ownnership transferred, the serf was also transferred with the land as part of the transaction. So yes, serfdom was in fact a very "bad deal"" in parts of Eastern Europe.

However, in some cases, in exchange for being bound to the the land, some serfs also received property in exchange for their services, unlike slaves.

By and large, serfs were not defined BY LAW, as being subhuman, as slaves were.

As a matter of fact, I'm certain that letter wasn't written by a former slave in 1865.

Thats not surprising. But the fact is that literacy was equated with freedom by slaves in general, and although it was considered a crime for slaves to read, there were some who were taught to read as a way to "Christianize" them into believing that they should be grateful for what they "had".

Because its not logical to compare slavery in the US to slavery or serfdom anywhere else. You have too many vital components missing in slavery elsewhere to do a one to one comparison. The biggest being the deliberate destruction of the family unit.
