House passes bills to address baby formula shortage
Both bills, which now head to the Senate, are Congress' first legislative step toward alleviating the baby formula shortage.
www.cbsnews.com
"The House of Representatives passed two bills to address the nationwide baby formula shortage Wednesday night as families continue to face bare shelves across the nation. One measure would help enable recipients to buy formula by giving the Agriculture secretary the permanent flexibility to waive certain requirements the special supplemental nutrition program for poorer women, infants and children, known as WIC, that limit the brands and quantities of formula that WIC recipients may purchase. It passed with a large bipartisan majority of 414 to 9. All nine "no" votes were cast by Republicans.
A second measure to provide an extra $28 million to the Food and Drug Administration to help get fraudulent formula products off store shelves and boost the part of the workforce focused on formula, as well as FDA inspection staff, also passed, but with just 12 Republicans voting in favor. The baby formula shortage was exacerbated after a manufacturing plant from formula maker Abbott, the nation's largest, was shuttered in February after after four infants became sick with bacterial infections and two died."
Imagine the energy Republicans would have reacted with -- if 4 babies died as a DIRECT RESULT to the vaccine?? They would be demanding the drug maker who made the vaccine be shut down, all vaccines be taken off the market and also demanding the execution of Dr. Fauci, Biden, Pelosi, the guy who played Isaac on Love Boat, everybody.....but in this case, not much demonizing is being aimed at Abbot....this time, the blame is being put on the babies of detained illegals...because, to be quite honest, they are much more fun to hate on than corporate executives....but.....despite all of this hysteria over baby formula and this faux concern for "our babies" -- Conservatives are proving themselves to be full of shit once again....by being the only ones to vote against the very thing they claimed to be in favor of.....and before you say "only 9 voted no" -- those 9 happen to be the most "beloved" Conservatives with the MAGA crowd...by the way, over 190 Republicans voted against the second bill.....
And.....let us never forget this.....the party that screams "no regulations" placed restrictive regulations on our ability to import formula in a crisis just like this...
“[T]he provisions in the USMCA’s agriculture annex establish confusing and costly [tariff rate quotas] on Canadian exports of infant formula, and the United States imported no baby formula from Canada in 2021,” the Cato Institute noted last week, adding that companies will have little incentive to change that unless some of those restrictions and red tape is removed."
And let us not forget....it wasn't that long ago that the party who is now pretending to be concerned about "our babies" voted to cut the very funding that got said formula to "our babies" -- because blocking a mother's access to that formula is A-OK as long as that mother is poor.....which has been Conservative ideology for the past 100 years.....so yes, Carlin was right....again....
