It's simple human nature and Barney Franks is one of the few politicians willing to chalk human nature up as what it is and move above it. We need more politicians like Barney.
Lets face facts. You could give people a private island filled with family and friends and with every possible whim and need of theirs perfectly met. The best homes, the best doctors, the best food. Provide them maids and men servants so they didn't have to lift a finger and some would still whine , ***** and cry that they wanted more and everything didn't live up to their idea of perfect. ...................... That is human nature. Barney Frank knows that and he stays above that.
No matter what you do you cannot make some people happy.
That said, the US system has long been a mix of capitalism / socialism . And most of the socialism money goes to corporations by and large. In the US we forgive taxes and hand out grants to companies by the multi billions every year to get them to go out and do business. ........................... Think about it, no major infrastructure project starting with the US rails going forward till now ever gets done unless the tax payer funds it.
None , you cannot find a road, a water system, a utility plant or a port that was not built in large part by tax payer funds and then handed over almost free of charge to private companies to run and profit from.
Utilities , roads, rails, ports , major research and development all funded by tax payers. Always has been and always will be. Take Alaska for instance , they have been asking for a Gas pipeline ( not to be confused with a oil pipeline the tax payers already funded) A Gas pipeline that they have wanted for 30 years. Last year the federal government finally agreed to fund the 46 billion or more pipeline for the corporations. At the request of the Alaskan government. Something Sarah Palin pushed for.
Now the deal is set up like this. Always happens this way. The US federal tax payer will pony up most of the money. Alaska will pony up about a 1/4 of it. With the deal supposed to be that the gas and oil companies that use the pipeline pay us royalties every year for the use of the pipeline till it's paid off and then Alaska owns it and normally would sell it for peanuts to the gas companies. ............................ But what really always happens is this, as far as the paying for it goes. ...................... US federal tax payers will get stuck paying most of the money. Alaska will fall short on it's part and because they have such geographical problems like high heating costs for homes , a hard time keeping everybody working year round simply because of the weather. Alaska will plead it's case and a couple of years down the road the federal government will forgive Alaska's part of the debt so they can take care of the Alaskan peoples needs.
Don't forget each Alaskan and that includes minor children gets a check for about $3600 a year to offset the cost of living in Alaska. Plus for all intents and purposes Alaska has universal health care. The state runs helicopters and small planes cost free to patients all over the state to transport patients to health care . State ran not for profit clinics and hospitals all over Alaska where no patient gets a bill for care.
Now some will ask , won't the companies pay the tax payer back for their agreed upon costs of the pipeline?....................... The answer is a big fat No!
What will happen is the companies will hold up gas and oil production and when congress call's them in and ask's what is the problem?
Why aren't you producing more?
Come on oil companies , congress will say: the price of home heating and fuel for vehicles is going up and that hurts the economy so produce more. .................
The companies say:
Ah we would , but we owe you that big payment for the pipeline you built and that has caused us not to be able to buy more drilling rigs or expand our capabilities.
Woe is me the companies say: If we didn't have that big pipeline payment we could get out and drill more.
So Congress being blackmailed for all intents and purposes says :
Okay we will forgive that pipeline payments .
But you best get out there and drill more. We need more fuel for the economy.
( I have heard congress people say to oil companies many time's on cspan hearings: Now this is the last time: you best get out there and drill. Or we will give the leases to somebody else. Coarse they never follow through so the oil companies just keep blackmailing them to get out of taxes and debts for infrastructure)
That simply is how it works. And that socialistic system for American corporations repeats itself in every sector of the economy in one way or the other.
Why did I bother to say all that some will ask?
Because the woman at the Barney Franks townhall meeting is just like the majority of right wingers - clueless as to how the US social system for corporations really has worked for the last 40 years. When these people start screaming socialism because we talk about social programs or universal healthcare they prove how really clueless and uneducated as to how things really work in corporate America. We have long had a socialistic system in place for US Corporations.
So how stupid and clueless do people make themselves look when they say we don't want a socialistic country? When in fact for big companies we have always been a socialistic nation.
A side note: Small business does not reap the benefits of socialist capitalism the way big business does. In the US we reserve socialism for businesses who net multi millions and billions a year. Most small businesses never see a dime of that socialist capitalism that large companies enjoy.
So, as far as these undereducated sheeo like right wingers go who have long voted against their own self interests , it's about time politicians like Barney Frank stood up and told them................. what planet do you live on?
Or better yet, wake up and educate yourself because your being duped.
