During the Six-Day War, Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attack the USS Liberty in international waters off Egypt’s Gaza Strip. The intelligence ship, well-marked as an American vessel and only lightly armed, was attacked first by Israeli aircraft that fired napalm and rockets at the ship. The Liberty attempted to radio for assistance, but the Israeli aircraft blocked the transmissions. Eventually, the ship was able to make contact with the U.S. carrier Saratoga, and 12 fighter jets and four tanker planes were dispatched to defend the Liberty. When word of their deployment reached Washington, however, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered them recalled to the carrier, and they never reached the Liberty. The reason for the recall remains unclear.

The majority of Americans have accepted the loss as being legitimate for the greater good.

Occasionally a few will bring it to light again to whine about it. No American is seriously interested anymore.

The Liberty was deliberately sunk by Israel.
Not commenting on the act itself, but the ship wasn't sunk. If you want to complain about an event, please at least be cognizant enough to get the event right. I had a good friend killed on the Liberty and watching people throw around erroneous facts ticks me off.

It's been often said .....

IF deliberate then the attack on the Liberty was wrong and those responsible SHOULD have been held to account. Having said that the FOG OF WAR is just that. There is always going to be a doubt about it. It is in the books that Israel paid reparations as compensation though NOTHING will bring back those lost. My own view it that there may well have been sound military reasons to silence the Liberty from the Israeli side; war is like that.
