On The Smithsonian and Slavery: Trump’s Whitewashing of History

This has been a false narrative pushed by the far right for about 30 years now.

It rests on an entirely false narrative.

It falsely tries to represent Southern Democrats of the Jim Crow era and beyond as having the same values and motivations as modern liberals.

When, in fact, the opposite is true.

The trope rests on the general ignorance of American history among the target audience,

It also rests on desire of racists to erase their own past and pin it on their opponents.

With few exceptions, every Congressional seat once held by a racist Southern Democrat is now held by a racist Republican. Indeed, many of the more prominent Southern Democratic racist switched parties to the GOP from the late 1980’s to the mid 1990’s. Jesse Helms and Stom Thurmond come easily to mind.

This big lie was pushed heavily by demagogues like Rush Limbaugh (which is where I first heard it).

It shocked me, the first time I heard it.

The idea that the bigots and their Allie’s in the noise machine could y=take events that much of their audience lived through and transform it into a racist myth just amazed me.
They think we're stupid. Today's South is Republican and today's Republican party defends the Confederacy while simultaneously claiming that the Confederacy was Democrats.

We are already seeing massive improvement sin the weekly numbers.

give it a year and you will see the numbers. Two and the reduced murders alone will past hte hundreds mark. Or damn close.

We will be seeing reports from locals, on how they feel safer in the streets. Children playing in parks they were not allowed to go to, a year before. ECT.

I have asked dems if that happens would you support expanding the program to other dems cities so that instead of saving hundreds of black lives, Trump/Vance could save THOUSANDS of blacks lives.

Most libs refused to answer. THey pretended to be tood dumb to undestand the question or just spouted incoherent nonsense. The few that did answer, said NO.

They would rather see black men die by the thoudands, than give Trump a win.

No one feels safer under a lawless military occupation. Which is what this is.

This occupation was not the result of any crime crisis or imine t threat.

Trump made it up.

It has nothing to do with addressing street crime. The National Guard isn’t seen in the high crime areas. But they are a visible presence around public monuments and the Mall.

Anywhere that a Fox tv camera might be, so the message of Trump regime intimidation can be shown to the world.

I know quite a number of people who live in and around the district, from a wide variety of different backgrounds. Not one of them welcomes Trump’s thuggery.

Trump appears to have a problem with museums showing history. I guess teaching slavery is now woke indoctrination. So now he is attacking the Smithsonian.

On The Smithsonian and Slavery: Trump’s Whitewashing of History

On Tuesday, President Trump attacked the narrative long taught in US schools and documented in museums, about the abhorrent, centuries-long practice of slavery. He focused on The Smithsonian Institution, the world-renowned center of learning and culture based in Washington, DC.

Trump wrote on his social media platform, “The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was.”

“How bad slavery was.” It is simply unbelievable that such a statement could be uttered by a president in 2025. Yes, slavery was bad, President Trump. It was evil and remains a stain on this country. We should never stop talking about it.

Trump is a racist and bigot; like others on the right he fears facts and the truth, replacing both with disinformation and lies.

I think that today's Republicans need to stop trying to make it like today's Democratic party is the same party it was in the 1860's.
Both party's Have changed, Not IN A GOOD WAY.

THey will, very soon.

Your side are violent thugs.

Sure they will be, you are lying.

Give them a chance to feel their community become safer, and for their families to live more and die less.

Ask them again in two years.

Wait, you want to talk about slavery which ended 160 years ago, but you then don't want to talk about the Party of slavery, the Party of secession, the Party of black codes, the Party of the KKK, and the Party of lynchings, much of which was much less than 150 years ago.

IOW, you want to ignore facts and exculpate the Democratic Party.

How can any discussion of slavery not indict the Democratic Party?

It's called understanding the issues.

The dems today use hte same mindset as the slaveholders, for example their open argument that they need to be able to exploit illegal aliens for cheap labor.

The soliders of the COnfederacy, were AMERICANs, that was the whole point of the war, and any man would respect their service to their states, in defense of their homes.

. I don't have any attitude towards whites who aren't racist. So you racists can stop trying to include non-racist whites with you scum.

The problem is, you accuse anyone who doesnt agree with you as being racist, and, you also accuse them of being white.

So...as long as they just fall over and capitulate to everything you say, they're good, if they dont, they are racist white people.

A painting of parents & children climbing a ladder, Makes you want to close/ change Museums????

Can you be any more disingenuous? You know that the painting represents people illegally crossing our borders. This has already been stated

slavery did not start in the USA, it is still practiced in Africa and the mid east. To claim that we started it is the height of ignorance. Yes, it was, and is, terrible, but we did not start it and we ended it in this country.

the dems are still the party of big intrusive government and lack of individual freedom. that has not changed from civil war days, the headquarters may have moved north, but the ideology is the same.

We are looking at Republicans intruding into everything, so again you're wrong.

You can using this tactic. We are talking about American history.

No, I accuse those who have shown racist behavior and say the same things as racists, racists, and when people argue the same arguments as racist white people they are going to be called what they show themselves to be. Now none of this whining has anything to do with the president's white fragiity.
