OC Couple Threatened With $500-Per-Meeting Fines For Home Bible Study

So they should get special treatment because they are religious?

Note that while I don't agree with the punishment or even the law in the first place they should not be special in the law.

They are clearly causing a disruption on a weekly basis however.

If the people don't have a problem with it though I'm not sure why it should matter?

They should dispute it under the first amendment though.

How are they causing a disruption? Would it cause a disruption if a group of union members got together for a party once a week?

It may depend on where they live. I know that if my block was parked up on a regular basis for some idiot have meetings... i would be calling in and having them cited too.

Your block has parking restrictions, and the city would send out a bunch of tow trucks to get the impound fees. If OC did the same thing I would have no problem with them, the fact that they are trying to get money for the meeting is what I object to.

Entitlement junkies.

All they need to do is get a permit, but of course they are too good for that.

Who cares about states rights?

Why should they need a permit for something they are doing in their own house? Should the city be able to require you to get a permit to have meetings about political causes, because the ordinance covers that. What if you were organizing a petition to make the city provide more money for libraries and schools but they would not give you a permit? Would that be permissible or do you think it should only apply to things you do not like?

The people across the street had a day care study class for kids on the weekend. Don't think for one second that the neighbors here didn't break that crap up.

They had not permit for what they were doing. If they applied for one it would have been denied. Zoning. Residential. ...... end of story.

It's Orange County people, the most conservative right wing county in California. It's the home of the John Birch Society, people, and Disneyland where a young man with hair too long was once denied admission by the happist place on earth.

Oh look, it's 1960.

What do you call a man who works for Disney?

Gay. (Da Mouse don't hire straight guys - period!)

SAY, the head of the John Birch Society is BLACK, so you must be a RACIST!

What you see, and what you're all whinning about is what the rest of the country will be like if the New Right finishes its take over of the Republican Party and one day controls the agenda of the Congress and the White House as it already does of the Supreme Court.

You're a fucking moron.

OC went for Obama in 2008. The majority of the inhabitants are Mexican and we've got plenty of welfare..

I don't care if they are showing bi-weekly porno flicks with Palin and Rice....if the neighbors object, the neighbors object. One homeowner does not get to dictate what goes on in the neighborhood.

I agree. That does not give the city the power to charge people to have meetings in their home. They can, however, ticket anyone who parks illegally, and even tow the cars. One is unconstitutional, the other is dealing with the problem you claim they are trying to fix by doing something that should appall you.

the neighbors have rights too.

Its not about whos in their home its about screwing up the lives of their neighbors with 40 cars on a bi weekly basis.

Just because they are Christains doesnt gove them the right to ruin the neighborhood and the housing prices of the other people who live there

Yes, they do. They have the right to make sure that any illegally parked cars are ticketed. They do not have the right to tell their neighbors they cannot have people over to their house.

That's right... half an inch into my driveway...and i call for a tow.

what these people dont realize is its likely a parking issue.

I do not give a fuck what they claim the issue is, the government does not have the authority to dictate what people can discuss inside their homes.

I don't give a fuck what they are meeting for either. Look closely...its about regular meetings of 3 or more people. They don't give a shit about what they are meeting about.

I would have issues with the cars and fucking up my life...

Actually, they do care what they are talking about.

...violation of municipal code 9-3.301, which prohibits “religious, fraternal or non-profit” organizations ...

That is the ordinance they are citing. The news is leaving out a few facts.

If they were muslims you would not be defending this

If you are talking to me, I would be defending this. Unlike you I do not pick and chose who gets to have rights. The government does not have the right to tell anyone who they can have in their home, or require them to pay money for that right.

No, i agree... no one has the right to tell anyone what they talk about in their homes.

However as a neighbor......I have the right to complain about the nuisance what you are doing in terms of impacting the streets and neighborhood. Also if there is a stranding ordinance for a permit of regular meetings ....they pay up and shut up.

The city has an ordinance for ANY meetings of 3 or more people on a regular basis. They don't care what the meeting is about. No one is being singled out... they just got caught and or complained about.

So what they are saying is that it is zoned....residential.

Nope, only religious meetings.

It's a flagrant violation of the 1st Amendment.

They don't care what the meeting is about.

Yes they do, it specifically prohibits religious meetings.

No one is being singled out... they just got caught and or complained about.

It's an infringement of the free exercise of religion, an infringement on the right to assemble and a violation of equal protection under the law.

San Juan Capistrano is a miniature version of San Francisco. They're so far left that the main drag might be renamed "Che' Guevara Boulevard" (or maybe "Bolevar...")

Exactly! Residential means RESIDENTIAL.

No one is telling them what they can or cant worship....or what religion they can and cannot practice... hell worship this for all i care.... church of the oil drip lamp.

The problem is the permit actually only applies to some people, not everyone.

No they do not, the reporter quoted an official claiming they do. There is a difference.

And you didn't answer my question. If they get the permit, what changes?
The article I linked later in the thread than the OP shows that someone did complain.

What changes is that they either have the agreement of the neighbors to hold potentially disrupting meetings or they don't. Neighbors have a vested interest in what happens in their neighborhood.

But the 30 to 50 cars will still be parked out there every Sunday and Thursday and the neighbor who complained will still be pissed. That's the point I'm making. What the city is saying is that this is our law, but if you pay us money for this permit (ie. a bribe) we will waive it for you. That's nothing but extortion. The "problem" isn't solved, but the government is a few hundred dollars wealthier.

No, what they are saying it is illegal to talk about some things and not others.

I fail to see what the overall political leaning of the county has to do with anything. First of all, we aren't dealing with the county government; its a local city government. No one has established which party controls the local city government, but it's not like it matters anyway. Anybody with at least half an ounce of brains knows that both parties step on our civil liberties all the time. You're trying to make a partisan issue out of something that isn't because you're a petty, partisan person.

No, they aren't saying that at all. The neighbors HAVE to be asked to see if there are any objections.

Applying for the permit doesn't guarantee the permit if the neighbors object.

No..they are saying get a permit...pay up....and talk about what ever cult shit you want.

Chances are they would not GET a permit. When you apply for permits like that...it goes up for public comment. If the neighbors have already complained....i am sure they will complain about the application for the permit.
