A fully laden tractor-trailer can legally carry 46,000 pounds of freight on US highways...that is 23 tons.

One million dollars in US one dollar bills weighs 1.1 tons.

So one truck can carry 21 million dollars (yes, it's actually 20.9090909 repeating but 21 is close enough).

The question is, how many fully laden tractor-trailers will it take to transport 3.6 trillion dollars?

Hint:

One billion = 1000 million

One trillion = 1000 billion

Story from the Wiermar Republic of the United States of our probable future

So did you hear about the teamster who was hauling 1.1 tons of dollar bills who stopped to get a cup of coffee?

When he got back outside, somebody had stolen his truck... but they dumped the dollars in the parking lot, first.

=(3.6 trillion dollars) * (1.1 tons/million dollars)/(23 tons/tractor)
=(3.6e12)*(1.1/1e6)/23
=172,174 tractors

Now we see why you're a scientist and I'm a truck driver.

I defer to your answer and see if I can do better this time.

At 75 feet per tractor-trailer with 10 feet between them...62 trucks per mile...that would be a convoy 2777 miles long...farther than the distance from San Diego, CA to Charleston, NC.

The original intent of this thread was to point out the staggering amount of money 3.6.trillion actually is but I am curious where my calculation jumped the track so I don't make the mistake again.

I divided 1000 by 21 to get the number of trucks in a billion = 47.619047

I multiplied that times 1000 to get the number of trucks per trillion = 47,619.47

Then I multiplied that result times 3.6 = 171,428.56

Round up to 171,429

Where did I go wrong?

EDIT - Formula (1000M/21M)*1000*3.6

9 billion dollars in paper money (would guess 100s) stacked on pallets dissapeared in Iraq when Bremer was in charge.

How many pallets would that be? If it was 20s, multiply by 5.

I see you're still livin' in the past Ray.

There isn't enough info to answer your question as I don't know how many bills fit on a pallet.

But I can tell you if we had that 9 billion, we would only need 3,591 billion more to meet President Obama's budget.

I got what xsited1 got. I did it on my fancy calculator, too.

(3.6*10^12 trillion dollars)*(1.1 tons/1*10^6 million dollars)*(1 tractor/23 tons)
(3.6*10^12)*(1.1/1*10^6)*(1/23)
172,174

(in case anyone was wondering, I flipped the tons per tractor for my own convienience--not to confuse anyone)

"...And $1 BILLION dollars... now we're really getting somewhere...

Next we'll look at ONE TRILLION dollars.

This is that number we've been hearing so much about. What is a trillion dollars?

Well, it's a million million. It's a thousand billion.

It's a one followed by 12 zeros.

You ready for this?

It's pretty surprising.

Ladies and gentlemen... I give you $1 trillion dollars...

Notice those pallets are double stacked....and remember those are $100 bills. "

Nice find Pete

You want to know what one trillion dollars REALLY looks like?

It looks like our computer.
