In theory, I agree with this. Police who beat, or even torture as has happened in Canada, deserve full criminal prosecution and civil lawsuit. It doesn't happen, that's why Canada is known as a shytehole. If protesters injure or torture police, they deserve to be sued also.

NYC detectives' union turns the tables, vows to sue George Floyd rioters who attack officers

NEW YORK CITY – The focus of so much of the recent George Floyd protests has been on police violence against demonstrators and others, but in New York City, the union that represents NYPD detectives is turning the tables.

"If you assault a New York City Detective and there are no consequences from the criminal justice system, we have to have other means to protect our detectives," said Paul DiGiacomo, president of the Detectives' Endowment Association, which has represented some 19,000 current and former detectives. He vowed to sue any protestor, rioter or looter who attacked its members.

"It's heart-wrenching because they are out there doing a job under very difficult circumstances, trying to protect the innocent people that are protesting while the criminal element is within that group, assaulting, looting and victimizing not only police officers and detectives out there, but also the people of the city."

Kind of silly when you think about it. Do detectives work riot squad? An identifiable person somehow gets off on a clear cut assault on a police officer? Not likely. Who are they suing? Probably some kid that works at Starbucks or something with no money. Just some blowhard making noise and threatening something they might do in a really unlikely situation.

They won't get any money from the kid, and it may even expose some bad behavior from the police, but it will make some think twice.

Also, it could bring out the issue of provocateurs who were paid by a group. I say let the court decide more of this. In Canada we regularly have agent provocateurs who operate undercover and generate business and misrepresent citizens. If Americans have a path to sue them, they will be given a green light if they are also the victim of such lawsuits.

I say the more transparency and consequences for abuses the better. Or else, you will wake up n a shytehole like Canada and then you will REALLY have a reason to pursue defunding police, especially those lying roaches of the covert variety.

Did you even notice that the OP quote is a detective union rep. talking about detectives? I may be wrong but it does not seem like police detectives are down with the armor and the nightsticks and pepper spray fighting in the street.

Suing the ones who attack the police is a good idea. A judgement is good for ten years and renewable in ten years increments. Attach those Starbucks paychecks. Forever.
