NY bill to Require Background Check to buy a 3D Printer

Well that sucks. Supposed you ask some goober at a garage sale "Do you have any guns you want to sell?" and he sells you one. Who gets dinged? The buyer or seller?
Both.

Of course as long as the gun is over 50 years old I'm GTG as I hold a 03 FFL.....I just enter the name/addy of the seller in my bound book so that helps some.....I carry a file copy in my wallet.

Sure, but who's gonna know? ;)

Wouldn't it be more effective to pass a law requiring all three d printer manufacturers to have a safeguard to prevent them from making guns?

3-D printers don't make guns, just parts. There are always other necessary parts that can't be printed, before it's an actual working firearm. Of course the BATF considers the frame or receiver to be a "firearm."

I would never trust firing a "plastic" gun.
Is there a demand for these things, or is this just typical overreach?

They are made to be single shot.....More to take another's gun from him when used by insurgents.

Think the liberator pistols dropped into France during WW-2.

It doesn't help that only for states require ghost gun kits to have serial numbers. There are plenty of scumbag companies that make the necessary parts and will sell to anyone. And because the parts they sell aren't technically firearms they don't require background checks.

Which is why the guy who shot the United health CEO jammed. More than one shot will almost always jam on the cheap kits used to make these guns

"New York State Senator Jennifer Rajkumar sponsored State Assembly Bill A02228, which requires anyone selling a 3D printer capable of “printing a firearm or any components of a firearm” to “request and receive criminal history information.”

According to Gizmodo, this gives New York State 15 days to conduct the background check and determine whether the buyer can buy the printer. The senator proposed this law on January 15, which is still being considered at the committee level."

What's next aluminum bars?

Bridgeport milling machines and lathes?

Drill presses?
Well the tools you are talking about for the making of a fire arm that are not effected do take some skill to operate so not on the same level. This bill is mis guided though.

It has nothing to do with "scumbag companies." Actually you can buy the necessary parts on Ebay from private individuals, all day long. The only part you can't buy is the frame or receiver, which is what those 3-D printers make. Search for Glock slides and barrels on Ebay and see what I mean.
