Moe and Shemp were brothers ... came into the business together ... it was decided early on that Curly was funnier ... but Shemp remain with the crew and was active in most all their movies ... even played some bit parts here and there ...

It takes exceptional talent and brilliance to play stupidity on stage or screen ... only the most gifted can pull it off ...

Shemp started out with the Stooges under Ted Healy in the 1920s then went off to pursue an independent opportunity playing a thug kid as part of the Bowery Boys or some such thing, so Moe enlisted the help of younger brother Curly to fill his place and when Curly had a stroke and was disabled in the mid-40s, Shemp, who hadn't been doing well on his own came back to reprise his original role with the Stooges.
