I didn't go to Sturgis this year, but I've got more than a few friends who did. Yeah, for the most part, no one seems to be too concerned with masks or social distancing, although there are certainly examples of that.

It's my understanding that a lot of bars have removed seating areas, as to encourage people to not stay in one place too long (which is usually what Sturgis bar owners want). My one buddy told me that he's yet to walk into an establishment which didn't have copious amounts of hand sanitizer available. Every bar, while not requiring them, has masks available for patrons, and many choose to wear them.

These few days are absolutely imperative to the health of Sturgis, from a financial perspective. Monies brought in over this week will sustain businesses there through the year. It's an insane amount of money. Many businesses only open during the rally, but many still are open year round. The first time I drove through Sturgis was in June of 2013. I was sitting at the bar in the Knuckle Saloon having a burger and a Coke. The bar is in the back of the room in this picture:

There were six other people there having lunch, and some staff were there. That was it. As you can see, The Knuckle is a big place, so I asked the bartender how they could afford to operate such a big place with so few customers.

"The rally" she said. "The rally pays all of the bills for the year, from mortgages and leases to paying the cooks. It covers it all." She said during the rally, millions of dollars will go through that bar, and that bar's nothing special. It happens all over town.

But, the reality is they can't survive without the rally. There could be an outbreak of leprosy and they'll figure out how to hold the rally because, if they don't, they're done...

So you build a 50,000 square foot bar for a few days a year?
That makes no business sense, but to each their own.
You were smart not to go. All the hand sanitizer in the universe ain't gonna keep those people safe.

Got that private Florida businesses? You don't have to listen to the big government socialist and chief Florida death cultist. You do what you feel is right for your company, your employees and your customers.

A federal judge has ruled in favor of Norwegian Cruise Line's challenge to a law signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis banning cruise companies from requiring proof of COVID vaccines to board ships in the state.
On Friday, Norwegian Cruise Line asked Judge Kathleen Williams to block the ban of requiring written proof of a COVID vaccine in Florida, arguing that it jeopardized the health and safety of crew members and was in breach of the First Amendment's right to free speech.
"It's scary what is happening in Florida. Florida is a hotspot," Norwegian attorney Derek Shaffer told the judge during a remote hearing on Friday, referencing the record-breaking COVID case numbers. "All we're doing is trying to protect our staff and passengers."

Nominated by Barack Obama on January 5, 2011, that's all that nedd be said.

Maybe she vaxed and didn't tell her anti-vaxer Daddy? :) Here's the latest. Sounds very inconvenient:

Bahamas

Open to U.S. visitors. As of Aug. 6, all travelers over the age of 2, regardless of vaccination status, must upload a negative PCR test result taken within five days of arrival in the Bahamas. (This new protocol is waived for anyone who has already applied for an obtained a Bahamas Travel Health Visa.) Unvaccinated travelers ages 12 and older must also take a rapid antigen test on day four if staying longer than five days and fill out a health questionnaire every day of their stay. Testing centers are located in many hotels, resorts, medical centers, marinas and municipal locations.

Good thing she didn't vax, because it DID NOT MATTER ONE FUCKING BIT.

:laughing0301:

At this point, is there really any advantage whatsoever to getting the vax to which anyone can point, other that pure 100% virtue signaling?

I enjoy kicking the shit out of you.

So she had to get a PCR test five days in advance or else have a Bahamas Travel Health Visa. Then she had to take a rapid antigen test on day four, and then she had to fill out a health questionnaire every day. Sounds like a fun vacation!

You would think, but consider:

They're expecting about 800,000 visitors to Sturgis this year. Figure that, every day, each one will spend, on average, $100 on food and drink. That's $80,000,000 a day. Now, multiply that by the ten days of the rally: that's $800 million dollars getting dumped into that town on just food and booze. I don't know if you've ever been there, but outside of the rally, it doesn't really strike you as the type of place which would ever see $80,000,000. for anything. Now, factor in those who buy souvenirs. My first year there I think I spend about a grand on various bullshit I just couldn't live without. But let's say the average attendee spends half of what I spent. That's an additional $400 million.

What are we up to? $1.2 billion?

Now, let's look at what the hotels bring in. My buddy and his girl are paying $380 a night for a room in Deadwood, about 15 miles from Sturgis. That's $3,800 for the duration of the rally. Rooms in Sturgis tend to hover around the $450 range. Every hotel within a 50 mile range is sold out for the ten days of the rally. I don't know how many rooms are within that 50 miles, but there are a lot of them, so the amount of money brought in would be astronomical.

Now, of course, not everyone goes and spends the entire ten days there. Some will go for a weekend. Others will go during the week, having the mistaken that it won't be as crowded. I'd guesstimate that easily a third of attendees spend the entire ten days there. Hey, when you ride in from Florida, you're not doin' it for a few days. So, let's average a hotel room at $400, with approximately 1/3 of attendees staying for the duration. That's right about a billion dollars for hotel rooms. Our total now is over $2,200,000,000.

Now, what about campgrounds? Camping is a big thing at Sturgis (as it is here in Daytona). If you take a motorhome, a site can cost you $800 for the duration of the rally. There are some 3,500 RV sites in and around Sturgis, and I can't recall the last time they weren't sold out for the duration.

So, yeah, when your 50,000 square foot bar can pull in all the operating capitol it needs for the entire year within a ten day time span, it's evident it's not really that bad a business decision...

You were smart not to go. All the hand sanitizer in the universe ain't gonna keep those people safe.

Covid didn't really play a role in my decision to stay in Florida. I've ridden to Sturgis five of the last eight years, and I'll certainly do it again.

My friends who are there, with the exception of two of them, are all vaccinated. It'll be interesting to see who gets sick...

Doesn't have to be. They are the consumers. If you are a business you will serve everyone according to the law unless there is a health hazard involved.
Thats you making up rules as you go along

Maybe they changed things, because she didn't have to do any of that shit.

The most difficult part of all this was getting her international phone/data plan activated.

Who's her carrier?

I have AT$T and, when I travel outside the country, I don't have to do anything special. My existing plan is set up such that, if I use my phone to make a call or send a text, I get charged $10 extra for the ensuing 24 hours. So, if I make a phone call at 12:01pm local time, I can make as many calls and send as many texts as I want until 12:00 the next day, and be charged only $10.

There's no charge for accessing wi-fi...

I have AT&T but I did not have that set up on the plan, so I got hit with a $120 international roaming notice. Called them up and got it removed and rated at $10 per day, like you have.
