I heard this joke decades ago and I find it interesting that your post caused it to return to my working memory:

Road Runner, you should try traveling, there is a huge world outside of where you grew up. And believe me, even though it might seem like the sun rises and sets upon where you live, it doesn't.

How is it pretentious? I didn't say "travel the world". She admitted that she was born & grew up in the same area she currently lives in which is why in all likelihood her perspective of the U.S. is so narrow and why I would wager she believes that she is entitled to the opinion that everyone in the U.S. should speak English.

Why should ANYONE have to do ANYTHING to accommodate her or ANYONE else who has no direct contributing impact on their life?

You know how they say ignorance is bliss? Well in her case that's obviously not true since she's on this message board complaining about how the world doesn't accommodate itself to her perspective.

That's the kind of response that I got today when my fiancée and I went out to dinner and I asked for a box for my French fries. This is such a pet peeve of mine. Granted, the man I saw had on an apron so he was probably a dishwasher or something, but if you live and especially work in this country and especially at a place where people might ask you stuff like a restaurant (I asked him for a box because I couldn't find our waitress) then you should speak or learn to speak English. It drives me crazy! (Hopefully he was at least legal though but I just kept my thoughts to myself until we got back in the car)

What you had there RR was an illegal alien.
They are only here to send money home to their family so why should they learn our language?

He wasn't humiliating him, he is just expressing his frustration, which I don't blame him for.

Look, I am an immigrant myself, and I used to struggle with English, too. But that does not mean that I am now not annoyed with people who I cannot communicate with. And it's not because I am an evil racist or angry white guy (WTF??) or anything. But rather, it's something down to human nature---people naturally get frustrated when they can't communicate with someone. Doesn't matter how slow their speech is, doesn't matter how dumbed down their vocab is, the other person simply does not get it, and just stands there and stares at you blankly. This has nothing to do with race or nationality.

There is a very nice European lady here who doesn't speak a lick of English. Do I treat her poorly because of it? No. But I am under no obligation to like her, either. And if some dipshit gets all holier than thou and tries to lecture me about I should like her despite not being able to understand her at all, then I will tell him to get f*cked, all in my native tongue, just to see how he likes it.
