ā€œThose crazy socialists in Britain are putting people in prison for posting on social networksā€, says Argentine President Javier Milei. Of course, there is a bit more to it than that. But he’s got the gist right. Perhaps all those worthy lawyers and distinguished members of the Labour Party who fret so much about the image of this country might reflect on what their current behaviour is doing to it.

The 2003 Communications Act criminalises ā€œgrossly offensiveā€ messages, even sent in private, and whether anyone reads them or not. Sentencing is tougher if messages are motivated by ā€œhateā€. People have been given prison sentences for (admittedly unpleasant) private Whatsapp messages.

... the 1986 Public Order Act, which, broadly, makes it a crime to cause someone ā€œalarmā€ or ā€œdistressā€ through writing or speech that is ā€œabusiveā€ or (in some circumstances) just ā€œinsultingā€. It also criminalises messages likely, or intended, to ā€œstir upā€ hatred on grounds of race, religion, or sexual orientation. In these latter areas, the Attorney General’s consent to prosecute is required, as a safeguard, but many such charges have been brought in recent days, so it looks as if the new Attorney General has given a very broad sign off. Perhaps the shadow attorney general would like to investigate, if it is not too much trouble?

... Online Safety Act. This creates a new concept of ā€œfalse communicationā€ and makes it illegal to send a message known to be false and intended to cause ā€œpsychological or physical harmā€. Newspapers and broadcasters are exempt, but individuals are not. Yes, ā€œfake newsā€ is now a crime in Britain, and people are being prosecuted for it.

...... The Labour Party has now scrapped the law protecting freedom of speech at universities, and is musing about controlling social media further. The legal establishment seems to have a particular animus against free comment in the media

We are heading towards a real crisis. There has always been some censorship in Britain, more’s the pity, but until recently it was artistic and cultural, not political. We prided ourselves on being a free country in which we could speak freely. We simply cannot say that now. We are, in fact, all vulnerable. Say the wrong thing in the wrong way at the wrong moment, and any of us might find the police at our door.

Can you imagine the Labour Nazi assholes reading the posts on USMB?
Their tiny heads would explode lol.
Freedom of Speech is essential for a free society.
Freedom of Speech is the first thing that is crushed under a tyrannical government.
Let people hear and read everything and then use their own judgement as to what to take seriously.
Ironically it is the tyrannical governments that lie the most.

Yeah, they're hosed. Barring a revolution/8th Crusade, their citizens are in a bad way.

Hard to believe free speech is disappearing in Britain. Freedom was at the heart of liberalism. Freedom was cherished during the Enlightenment.

Will we have to get a new name for the Free World? Maybe the Dying World?

The statist left marxinazis in the UK most likely view our USMB the same way Christians view the antichrist. No other way to say it; USMB the NEW STATUE OF SWEET LIBERTY!!!

So which country is free?

Treason is punishable in most countries.

Freedom of speech, like any other right, has LIMITS.

Posting on social media which leads to people destroying things, is not protected speech.

This isn't an issue of free speech, this is about ignorance of free speech and human rights.

People on the left now defend book burning and censorship.

When the left becomes authoritarian what good is it? What does it have to offer?

The worst rightists are on the left.

I would suggest that people on both sides will end up defending the same things, and then attack the other side for supporting them.

"The worst rightists are on the left".... I mean... that's a ridiculous thing to say. All it says to me is A) you don't understand the left-right political spectrum and B) you're so caught up in the fact that you're "on the right", that you can't see anything clearly.

The left criticizes those on the right for being authoritarian elitist warmongers, but the leftists themselves are sometimes authoritarian elitist warmongers.

People on the left, rather than "the left", criticize people on the right and people on the right criticize people on the left.

You're literally pointing out politics 101 stuff here.

What's your point? Or is it that only the left are bad and the right is amazing kind of bullshit?

You are slow.

I am saying leftists are sometimes authoritarian elitist warmongers and wouldn’t it be better if they weren’t.

Rightists are also sometimes authoritarian elitist warmongers.

I didn't get past the first two words of your post.

Conversation over. Bye bye

The third word was slow.

I guess deciphering those first two words was a struggle and understanding my whole post would have taken you hours.

It's really a dumb idea to publish grossly offensive material on Facebook with your real name and facial photo attached to the offending post. British police can easily track you down.

Three men from Tonypandy have been charged with publishing threatening material on a Facebook account intending to stir up religious hatred, contrary to the Public Order Act 1986.

Geraint Boyce, 43, Jamie Michael, 45, and 40-year-old Daffron Williams all appeared at Merthyr Crown Court on Monday, August 12, where Geraint Boyce and Daffron Williams pleaded guilty. They are due to be sentenced on Friday, August 16. Jamie Michael pleaded not guilty. His next court hearing is Friday, August 23, at Merthyr Crown Court. All three have been remanded in custody awaiting their next appearances.

I used to know a student from pakistan who, like you, insisted that his country had free speech

ā€œThe newspapers are free to print the truthā€ he said

ā€œAnd government decides what the truth isā€

When China said Hong Kong had democracy. We choose the candidates, you can vote on those candidates... that's democracy. And you realize that it basically sums up the US political system too

I wont defend America to a Brit who lives in a glass house any more than I would to a clueless pakistani

But I do worry that the brain disease that infects libs in the UK will spread to anti free speech libs in America too
