The other thing Mingo Junction is known for:
The Mingo/Shawnee Indians accepted Logan as their chief. He was the son of a chief who was very close to the whites in PA. He took the name James Logan to honor his father's friend.
One of the Mingo Indians tried to steal the spanceled horse of Michael Myers who was scouting the area west of the Ohio River with several of Geo. Washington's scouts. Facing a 3-month walk back to his home, Myers shot the Indian. Fearing reprisal, the scouts went back across the river to the Virginia side, where they told the innkeeper of a bar called Hell's Half Acre about the incident, then they left for home. The owner of the Inn gathered several men who hid behind his establishment and when the Indians showed up to find out who killed their brother, they were ambushed and killed. One was Logan's brother, another was his sister, who had her baby with her.
The speech Logan made after the massacre was used all over Europe to prove that the Indians in America were not ignorant savages:
Logan's Speech:
"I appeal to any white man to say, if he ever entered Logan's cabin hungry, and he gave him not meat; if he ever came cold and naked, and he clothed him not. During the course of the last long and bloody war Logan remained idle in his cabin, an advocate for peace. Such was my love for the whites, that my countrymen pointed as they passed, and said, "Logan is the friend of white men." I had even thought to have lived with you, but for the injuries of one man. Colonel Cresap, the last spring, in cold blood, and unprovoked, murdered all the relations of Logan, not even sparing my women and children. There runs not a drop of my blood in the veins of any living creature. This called on me for revenge. I have sought it; I have killed many; I have fully glutted my vengeance; for my country I rejoice at the beams of peace. But do not harbour a thought that mine is the joy of fear. Logan never felt fear. He will not turn on his heel to save his life. Who is there to mourn for Logan?-Not one."
