After the British variant and its South African and Brazilian counterparts, a new mutation of coronavirus has just been identified. Although there are in fact many variants, this one is to be closely watched in the same way as the three cities previously, if not more.
A particular mutation in the Spike protein
British researchers have discovered that the first cases of this new variant, called B1525, date back to December 2020. Since then, 39 cases have been detected in the United Kingdom and 35 in Denmark. There have also been 29 cases in Nigeria, 10 in the United States, 2 in Australia... In all, thirteen countries are affected, including France with 5 cases. But these figures are most likely below reality and are constantly changing. You can find the updated figures here in this report from the University of Edinburgh.
Scientists are alarming because B1525 has several mutations including E484K. It is a mutation on the Spike protein, found on South African and Brazilian viruses. This allows the coronavirus to penetrate better and thus infect cells. But it would also have an impact on the effectiveness of some vaccines. Other mutations have been reported, Q677H and F888L, whose specific effects are not yet known.
A virus from Nigeria?
If the virus was first detected in the UK in mid-December, this does not mean that it is the place of origin of this mutation. These "first infected" were linked to Nigeria, where one case was discovered in late December and 12 of the first 51 samples analyzed showed the presence of this new variant. At this time, it is difficult to know where this mutation was born and which country was subsequently contaminated.
We must therefore closely monitor this variant without giving in to panic. Especially since with the proliferation of variants for several months, including some that possess the E484K mutation, the laboratories are already working on a new formula of the vaccine. This should make it possible to be as effective as ever, regardless of whether the targeted virus has mutated or not.
