The Iranians distrust the USA, look at 1953. They were aware of the Usraeli plans to invoke Kurds and agitators to undermine the government and so they will naturally have been very suspicuous and sensitive to suddent mass protests. We have no idea if some of those protesting were paid operatives of your government.
