Fact IMO is, in order to avoid Ukraine from becoming a NATO member (That's what this whole thing is about) Putin should not just have invaded Crimea and Donbas in 2014 - but taken on the Ukraine as such. Back in 2014 Ukraine didn't have any military means towards a credible defense, to stop even a Russian attack consisting solely of T55's and other 1950 Soviet era crap.
