Article says it would hit like a 15 megaton nuke which they say is 100 times more than hiroshima. In truth hiroshima was 15 kilotons so actually it's a 1000 times more.

feb 11 2025 NASA is making emergency preparations to deal with a ‘city-killing’ asteroid after the odds of it smashing into Earth continue to rise.

Astronomers are keeping a close eye on Asteroid 2024 YR4, which currently has a 2.3% chance of colliding with the Earth in 2032.

The 300ft wide rock is roughly the same size as the Statue of Liberty or Big Ben, and has shot to the top of NASA’s watch list after it was first discovered in December 2024.

With the ‘time-critical meteor hurtling towards our atmosphere at an alarming rate, the space agency has enlisted the help of the James Webb Space Telescope to study YR4 and gauge how much damage it would cause if it did strike our planet, the European Space Agency reports.

Excellent! So, 97.7% chance of missing the earth entirely, and we have 7 years to evaluate to greater accuracy of assessment. Cool!

The scientists also said that it would lower Earth's temps about two degrees. So, need to do any Climate Change initiatives. All we have to do is wait about seven years. In fact, if we lowered Earth's temps two degrees now and another two degrees when we get smacked, we will be in a world of hurt.

If it's loose rock, it would be like a tunguska event.

If hard metal, more like that Crater in the midwest US.

either over a city would be very bad. The 2nd in the ocean would bad as well.

If it hits anywhere, i hope it hits mexico. They are our biggest enemy; 20 million mexicans already living here illegally and collecting welfare and 20 million more on the way. Mexico got hit by that roid 65 million years ago that killed off the dinysaurs. That was estimated at 100 miles wide!!

It's ok, I know a crew of roughnecks that will dispatch that asteroid in short order!

Hey.
That was the plot of 9-1-1 Lone Star last week.

No worries...
We gots Rob Lowe!!! download (5).webp

The video I saw projected impact on or near the Ecuadorian coast. As they do not know if it will actually hit us, I presume this was based on the projected date/time/angle of interface.

15MT is messy but certainly not earth-stopping.

Yeah I don't even know if 15 megatons is an accurate description of an impact that big.
Depends on the weight and mass of the asteroid. 300 ft wide? It will affect global weather for a decade.... The impact crater would probably be in the area of 10 to 15 miles across.

There's a possibility it would penetrate the crust which would make it even worse.

This is roughly the same size as the asteroid that exploded over Russia in 1908 - roughly the size of Big Ben.
On a global scale, 50MT isn't all that much.

50 sounds a little bit more like it.
Of course the 1908 rock fully disintegrated in the atmosphere. A 300 foot wide projectile if it made it all the way through and managed to penetrate the crust would be almost unpredictable as the amount of energy released. Not all asteroids are created equal some of them have the consistency of Styrofoam. Some of them have the consistency of coal.... Some of them have a metal core. Those are the real bad boys.
