The law is the law. Pretti was emotionally disturbed and violent but he never met the legal standard to be killed.

The Pretti shooting was not lawful since he was not an imminent threat. He was disarmed and helpless when shot. The threat must be imminent which means going to happen now this second. In contrast the Good shooting was lawful.

Self-defense law has 2 dimensions, one objective (would a reasonable person in the same situation feel threatened). And one subjective (did the shooter, in fact, feel threatened). Further, it requires, both subjectively and objectively (the reasonable person standard), the apprehension of immediate death or severe bodily injury of the shooter or others.

This requires a factual determination. There is not a bright line test. You cannot make a finding of illegality merely by viewing the video.

Pretti was on all fours with five other goons holding him down and the shooter shot him in the back and then backed away and fired 10 more rounds into a dead body.
