Hamtramck High School started Princess Prom in 2012 to give Muslim girls an opportunity to dress as they please and dance the night away.
Organized by five Muslim girls, they expect 250 for this year’s hoopla.
But two staples of school proms are missing from this one: boys and phones.
“We’re on our phones 24-7 and if you don’t have it for a few hours, it’s so calming and everybody is having a fun time,” said Aisha Khanum, 18.
“The girls work through the year to do fundraising,” said Caitlin Drinkard, a school counselor who helps organize the annual event. “They sold walking tacos, T-shirts, and flowers on Valentine’s Day.”
Drinkard said it gives the girls a chance to celebrate sisterhood.
For the girls, it may be the only time to celebrate as many of their ultra-conservative parents bar them from attending the school’s regular prom.
