The problem with the "Rand Paul is a real conservative" canard is that the Republican voters finally had enough of "conservative Republicans," who kowtowed to and surrendered to Democrats at every turn. Having conservatism as a guiding principle seemed to include that surrender as a doctrine.

Trump is an "America First" Republican, which is a much better guiding principal than conservatism. It is cynical and condescending for Republican lawmakers to tell us how fiscally conservative they are and constantly being thwarted in their quest to balance the budget by their big spending, big borrowing colleagues.

That's why he drew so many voters who had previously voted Democrat. He made promises that would actually help them. He was often successful, sometimes not so much. But how much better is a president who tries with moderate success to improve our lives than a president who runs on a dream of a balanced budget that anyone with the least bit of awareness knows is not going to happen?
