When you bypass or ignore a sovereign nation’s immigration laws, how is that respecting a country’s laws? How is that not a crime?

This isn’t unique to US. If I go to the US and Canadian Border and enter the country - which is very easy to do- have I shown respect for their laws? I may assimilate, work and pay Canadian taxes but I’ve committed a crime and not shown respect for their laws.
