Actually it is. When Mandela took over South Africa it was was prosperous, safe, and the economic powerhouse on the continent.

It is now unsafe for everyone, crime ridden, corrupt, and its economy is cratering. 33% unemployment, and a gdp growth of under 1% even though it is mineralogically one of the richest countries on the planet.
