I remember reading about another legally sound idea that was rejected by more than 70% of Americans as insensitive, wrong, and even unconstitutional.

Now, what was that issue?

Most Americans Approve of Interracial Marriages

According to the poll, 77% of Americans say they approve of marriages between blacks and whites, while 17% say they disapprove. Public support for black-white marriages is now at the high end of the range of approval seen on this question since Gallup first asked it almost 50 years ago. The latest result essentially ties with the 76% approval rating found in 2004.

In 1958, only 4% of Americans said they approved of marriages between whites and blacks. By the time it was legalized by Loving v. Virginia in 1967? 75% of Americans disapproved.

So yes, in times in history, the majority can be wrong, the majority can be stupid on a topic, etc.
