I agree with you wholeheartedly! I have been saying this for years. What do we ask the gov't permission to marry?

But when we take the gov't out of the equation, we also take out the benefits it bestows on married couples. I guess people prefer benefits to freedom.
I disagree. Go to a lawyer, draw up a contract that proves you're legally married and that's that
 
Marriage is a contract between consenting adults. You can't marry children, siblings, cousins etc.
A contract that can be drawn up by a lawyer. There's no need for the government to be involved.
