Unemployment rate falls to 8.6% in November


(AP) Washington (AP) —The unemployment rate fell last month to its lowest level in more than two and a half years, as employers stepped up hiring in response to the slowly improving economy.

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate dropped sharply to 8.6% last month, from 9% in October. The rate hasn't been that low since March 2009, during the depths of the recession.
Employers added 120,000 jobs last month. And the previous two months were revised up to show that 72,000 more jobs added — the fourth straight month the government revised prior months higher.
Still, one reason the unemployment rate fell so much was because roughly 315,000 people gave up looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.

Now, the truth of the matter is -- and Bloomberg News even points out that the only way -- it's a corrupt number. It is a corrupt number. Folks, the number of people who have quit looking for work in the last few weeks is 315,000. Those are the people have thrown up their hands after 99 weeks or more of being unemployed; and they've said, "I'm quitting. I'm not looking." So they're not counted. Therefore, the universe of jobs available in the country is down by 315,000. That is the labor force participation rate. The labor force participation rate is a meager 64%. It fell to 64% from 64.2%. So the 0.2% drop equals 315,000 people leaving the workforce.

That means there are 315,000 fewer jobs to have, so the universe of jobs has been steadily shrinking. What was the number of jobs created? It's 120,000 jobs. It's a 120, 126,000, whatever. That's in the ballpark. That number of jobs created can lower unemployment rate 0.4%, almost one half of a percent? Creating 120,000 new jobs can do that? That alone tells us how small the labor force participation rate is. That tells us how small the universe of available jobs in the country is, when creating 120,000 -- and we still have, don't forget, over 400,000 applications for

unemployment compensation reported yesterday. So just 120,000 new jobs can lower the unemployment rate almost a half a point. That's not possible without that 315,000 figure, the 315,000 people who have just walked away.

The sad part is that true unemployment is about 15%.

Our government uses a flawed formula to calculate unemployment... They don't count those who have maxed out their unemployment benefits or those who have never worked a day in their lives...

Our government uses those who are actively on unemployment as their common denominator...

We'd get a more accurate number with a basic poll rather than their formula... The misery index is probably more accurate then the alleged unemployment numbers.

if it's higher now b/c their formula is flawed, then it's ALWAYS been higher than what was reported in all of the department of labor's history of reporting it. so that's pretty fuggin irrelevant.

The reason unemployment # dropped is because 315K people stopped looking for jobs.

Then for the jobs that were "created" in Nov, more than half were in seasonal low paying retail, restaurant and bars! 70% are in these low level service jobs, which a large portion of these jobs can be attributed to temporary and seasonal! Either way 120K jobs "created" is horrible for any month and for the holiday seasonal time it's pitiful!

Um do liberals realize retailers hire temp seasonal workers for holiday push and then let them go come Jan? I used to do some work every Christmas break when I was on College break.

Do liberals realize that bars and restaurants gear up for humble day, Christmas break when the beer drinking college kids come home, the holiday season and of course New Years? They start the holiday hiring in Nov and usually cut them loose in Jan!
