Bars and restaurants will have to adapt where people go out less. Or they can go out of business. The free market at work. Win win.
..it's a web....restaurant workers would lose jobs....the businesses that provide services/food/etc for those restaurants will then lose jobs, and so on and so on
Why do you keep looking backwards? Why are you so desperate to preserve McJobs that pay minimum wage with no health insurance, when this has the potential to open up white collar jobs for the masses? Companies can hire more workers, to increase the high end information technology and service industry jobs which are limited by the need for bricks and mortor businesses, to expand. If you can expand your workforce for the cost of a laptop and software instead of having to rent/purchase larger premises, and spend a shit ton of money on providing them with a workspace.
Americans are the most obese people in the first world, in large part because so few people are cooking at home. North Americans eat 1/3 of their meals outside the home. Everyone I know, myself included, lost weight during lockdown, simply because home cooked meals are healthier than processed "ready for the oven" dinners, or fast food meals Americans are normally eating.
Fewer low end jobs in the fast food industry, which taxpayers are currently subdizing through food stamps, MedicAid, Section 8 or other income supports, in favour of high end data driven jobs telecommuting is a win/win all the way around.
- Reduced costs for workers in commuting means they get to keep more of what they earn;
- Reduced wear and tear on municipal infrastructure with fewer cars on the road meaning lower taxes for road maintenance and repair;
- More people eating at home improves the diets of Americans who are currently the most obese people in the first world, thereby reducing health care costs
This is like someone saying, "Why should we switch over from horses and buggies to cars?". What about the stable boys? The farmers selling grain for feed? The buggy makers? Those being displaced should be given free training for jobs in the "New Economy".
My son-in-law owns a small roofing company. He started from nothing when his daughter was born. Last year, his sales came close to $300K. He's gone from having his father drive him to his jobs to owing 2 trucks, 3 trailers, and 1 car. He is currently looking at a deal to sell and install solar panel roofs an exclusive relationship with Tesla, which could make him as rich as his grandfather, or he can continue doing quite nicely just installing shingles and torch down roofs in his city. Which route do you think this 27 year old man will take?
Evolve or die. That is your option. Start taking care of the people first. Get everyone well, and then get them back to work safely. The old "normal" is gone forever. The old "normal" isn't working for 40% of the American people.
If you have to rebuild, why not build on a solid foundation for the American people, instead of less for the people, more for the billionaires, which has been the result of every one of these crashes. Republicans are now actively trying to force people to "go back to the way things were", which wasn't working in the first place.
