Registering as an "Independent" is simply stupid. All it accomplishes is to prevent you from voting in primary elections (in rational States and Commonwealths). Allowing Independents or non-partisans to vote in Primaries is even stupider; it compromises the results of the Primary.
My father was a "Conservative" since before the term was even applied to politics. And yet in the Leftist bastion of Pittsburgh, he was a lifetime Democrat. The reason was that the only meaningful elections in Pittsburgh were/are the Primary Elections. It is those elections that decide who the elected officials will be. A vote in the Republican primary in a Leftist stronghold is nearly meaningless.
