I don't know if it's really so different or if maybe social media has given greater "credibility" and "legitimacy" to it.

Coulter was attacked largely because of what she said which were outright attacks in and of themselves.

But on behalf of Palin - there were a number of attacks on her and her family that were pretty personal and intolerant. When you think about it - Palin, Obama, Clinton all seemed be attacked in worse then male politicians and in far more personal ways. Attacked as women, not candidates.
