I don't want to think of what would happen if they showed up around here. The other day there were some, "Bring home the troops" marchers. They were not well received, people stopped their cars to yell at them.

KC CODEPINK Shuts Down Gas Station!
July 21, 2006
CODEPINK Kansas City
Kansas City, MO
KC Activists Shut-Down Area Gas Stations
By Anthony Badgerow
On Friday July 21, activists participating in a Kansas City
CodePink-initiated action took over three local gas stations during rush
hour traffic to highlight the connection between oil consumption and
American imperial policy in the Middle East. Participants "shut down" the
stations, telling customers the stations were closed for the day.
Fifteen participants, half on bicycle, traveled along Westport Road in
Kansas City, stopping at three major gas stations. At each one, those on
bicycle circled the gas pumps and then stopped in front of them and placed
a pink "out of order" sign on each. Others passed out fliers explaining
the need for the action. The speed and mobility of bicycles allowed the
activists to completely shut-down each station for a brief time and then
move on to the next one.
The KC police arrested one person as a result of the action.
At the first gas station, an angry witness assaulted on activist
attempting to strip her of her megaphone. He then assaulted another
activist who was quietly taking pictures of the attack and destroyed his
camera.
After the action was over, the attacker told the police that he had been
attacked, and led them to the location of the activist he'd first
attacked. Even though everyone else can attest that he attacked her, the
police arrested her on assault charges, and released her hours later.
It is important that we support the activist who was attacked by an irate
gas consumer and then falsely accused of assaulting him when defending
herself.
The police also briefly detained one activist who was urging others to
leave once the police showed up at the third and final gas station, but
they allowed her to leave at the close of the action.
We consider this energetic and innovative action a huge success because we
provided information and shut down strategic targets related to the war
machine. It was a beautiful alternative to the sidewalk sign-holding
street vigils Kansas City has grown so used to.
