I've seen at least three conservatives on this site talk about how Lincoln and the Union were wrong, and that the Confederacy should have been allowed to secede the way they did, and were on the right side of history..
Is this a popular stance among conservatives of today? Are they really pro-Confederacy when they look back on the Civil War? Or are there just a couple crazies here and there?
(This thread may also help the 'Gay Marriage' thread from being further derailed with Civil War arguments. Figured it was worth a shot haha)
First let's look at some facts.
1. This country was founded on the principles that free people should be able to govern themselves.
2. The Unites States of America is a plural term, indicating that is a union of free, independent, sovereign States.
3. The Federal Government and the Constitution are creations of the States.
4. The States didn't include anything in the Constitution that would prevent them from withdrawing from the Union if the State deemed in necessary for any reason. In fact the State of Virginia in their ratification of the original Constitution did so with a stipulation that they reserved the right to withdraw from the Union if their citizens felt it warranted.
Taking these facts into consideration the reasons the Confederates chose to succeed is irrelevant, they had every right to do so.
Lincoln is the one who decided to throw out our founding principles that a free people should be allowed to govern themselves and waged war against sovereign States. Lincoln was a tyrant in every sense of the word and by todays standards a war criminal as well, because he had his generals target civilian populations.
The victor writes the history, but they are not entitled to ignore the facts.
