You're conflating the issue. The church is not obligated to defend anyone any more than you are and it shouldn't be. It never had this obligation and it bore no responsibility or complicities for the actions of the pastor outside the church or its activities. For that reason, the protestors should never have stepped foot in the church to protest the pastor.
