Minnesota cops beg Walz, pols to let them work with ICE, say they could have prevented shootings

29 Jan 2026 ~~ By Reuven Fenton and Anthony Blair

MINNEAPOLIS — The head of a major Twin Cities police union slammed local officials for blocking cooperation between local cops and ICE and Border Patrol agents – saying if they had been involved, “there would be no loss of life.”
It comes as Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz agreed to have his top cop work with President Trump’s border czar Tom Homan after he rushed to Minneapolis Monday — after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was sidelined.
St. Paul Police Federation President Mark Ross blamed state and local officials for the anti-ICE protest violence — saying that if highly trained cops were allowed to work with the feds, it likely would have prevented the killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
“Unfortunately, our local politicians would not allow us to do that,” he added.
As a result ICE and Border Patrol agents — who are not trained to deal with civilian protests in the same way — have been all on their own to deal with angry locals.
He said that such cooperation didn’t even require changing Minnesota’s sanctuary laws — or helping ICE make immigration arrests.

Instead of helping to keep the peace, Ross said local cops had been left “stuck in the middle” of a street war between local politicians, federal agents and protesters.
“Part of it is leadership, because the leadership in our cities doesn’t want us communicating with the federal folks. And that disconnect has created some problems for everybody, and we’re stuck in the middle of it, and public safety is everybody’s responsibility,” he said.
“We want to be out there. We want to be keeping people safe, and it’s been really tough. We really feel like we’re in the middle of this, obviously, not by choice,” Ross added.

President Trump ordered hard-charging Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino back home, along with many of his agents, on Monday, following growing disquiet among Republicans about the heavy use of force in Minnesota.
Along with dispatching Homan to defuse the situation on the ground, President Trump also offered his support to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who has also faced criticism from some for her handling of immigration raids in Minnesota.
Asked whether he thought Sec. Noem would resign, the President told reporters Tuesday, “no,” before adding, “I think she’s doing a very good job.”

Commentary:
Walz and top Minnesota politicians opposing ICE need to be arrested and sacked from their positions for dereliction of duties, inciting civil disobedience, violence, riots and most of all their sedition. DHS, ICE and Minnesota police union should utilize local police trained to quell riots and Trump needs to ratchet it up with all sanctuary cities too.
If we had a remotely objective and fair press, the story out of Minnesota would be that if the Democrat administration would have cooperated with ICE to let ICE take criminals from jails, none of the riots and deaths would have occurred.
Walz and other DSA political officials especially Mayor Jacob Frey are 100% responsible for the violence because they have done everything to prevent cooperation between local and federal law enforcement.

I've been saying this for quite awhile. Instead of playing partisan politics, the Minneapolis mayor and the Minnesota governor ought to be making sure than ICE doesn't have to shoot anybody that impedes their operations. Just make sure the protesters are staying on the sidewalks and out of the way, what is so damn hard about that? But noooo, they gotta runt heir yaps with incendiary and inciteful language that gets people riled up and killed. Doesn't look to me like they care about their citizens.

The dems wanted the issue to divert attention from the Somali fraud business.

More likely local cops would have gotten shot by untrained, incompetent, trigger happy ICE goons.

That won't work because Democrat politicians WANT someone to die so they can rush to the cameras and spew their propaganda.

Well that would make me prime ICE agent material. Should I apply? I haven't been in any white supremacist groups or the Proud Boys, so those are knocks against me. But I have the IQ they are looking for.
You should apply at the nearest psych ward, pretty sure they will accept you. :cuckoo:

If CPB -- with NO police powers -- had done the correct thing and called local police, they would have been there to help.

In fact, nothing was stopping them at all.

So we can throw this thread in the trash.

First, I don't know what CBP is, but I do know that the Minneapolis mayor ordered his police dept NOT to assist ICE. So, calling the local police wasn't going to work and IMHO that mayor and the state governor contributed to the problem that led to 2 killings. Had they done their jobs like they should have, Good and Pretti would be alive today.

They would not have been "assisting ICE" to respond to a call of illegal activity. So that isnt relevant.

CBP = Customs and Border Patrol

So if actual cops had been around, the Keystone cops of ICE wouldn't have been able to murder Good and Pretti? Maybe, but I kind of doubt it. There are something like 600 cops in Minneapolis and 3000 ICE agents. That means each local cop would have to babysit 5 ICE cops on average. And of course the Minneapolis cops would have their regular work to do, outside of babysitting ICE agents. Chances are they wouldn't have been able to prevent the murders.

The Minnesota local and State police have already been filmed doing NOTHING, while ICE illegally brutalizes protestors.

The cops would be doing crowd control, not babysitting anybody. Were there that many ICE operations ongoing at the same time? I don't know but maybe they would've been the ones to deal with the idiots in the street that tried to impede the ICE agents from doing their job.

ICE agents are actually well trained at the Federal training center (FLETC) in Georgia. They get Criminal Investigator training, special agent training, basic police academy training. Beyond that they receive field training. Their training is tailored to federal immigration enforcement.

One more thing, these ICE agents are not trained for crowd control, it is assumed local law enforcement would be there to help but Frey and Walz refused to do that.
