I think the rich and well-connected do very well under both economic models in reality, but what about the middle and lower income classes? I would venture to say that the bottom 50-60% have a much higher standard of living in a capitalist society, which BTW includes the Scandinavian countries that are something of a blend. But if you wanna be like Olaf and Sven then you're gonna have to up your tax burden on everybody, not just the rich. Taxing just the rich just doesn't cut it.

The ignorance and associated fear of socialism that you people display is truly astounding. At the same time, I’m not sure if you do this out purely out of ignorance or as a political ploy to disparage democrats, In any case we have never denied our socialist roots which can be traced to the progressive movement of the early 1900's promoted by Teddy Roosevelt and others

American Socialism is nothing more sinister that governments attempt to reign in the excesses and greed of free market capitalism- greed which is inevitable-in order to level the playing field for those who are not wealthy and powerful. American Socialism- although rarely called that- brought us the labor movement and workers rights, social security, regulations that protect the environment, the progressive income tax, The Affordable Health Care Act, occupational safety, child labor laws and much more. Unless you can honestly say that workers and consumers should be at the total mercy of free market corporations, with no social safety net at all- you are- to some degree a socialist. You and many others are fond of railing against you loss of freedom, but I’m at a loss to understand just what those freedoms are. The government is less a threat to your loss of freedom than is the domination of the corporate state and the concentration of wealth that is being pushed by the tea party.

Socialism in this country is used all to often as interchangeable with fascism and communism. Yes there is the National Socialist Movement (Nazis) and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics-clearly systems that are oppressive. Yet today there is also The Norwegian Labour Party which is officially committed to social-democratic ideals. Its slogan since the 1930s has been "work for everyone", and the party seeks a strong welfare state…and it is a democracy as well. People need to get over this fear of socialism and become educated as to its real meaning.

Keep in mind that Fascism is a political system, socialism is an economic system that has existed in the context of various political systems ranging from the total control of a fascist state to democracies where the economic system is tightly regulated ( and yes in its extreme form, the means of production is owned by the state) Communism can be seen as the ultimate socialism with the abolishment of private property and businesses and ultimately the “withering away of the state” and the evolution of a utopian society with everyone being equal. That was the theory anyway and of course it never happened that way in the Soviet Union – or anywhere, as we know. Instead, the state could never relinquish control and ultimately self destructed.
