California shows how to be fiscally responsible refunding citizens money from the record setting $97B surplus.

More than half of California's residents may soon receive a stimulus check from the state, Gov. Gavin Newsom's office announced earlier this week.

As part of an inflation relief package worth $17 billion, an estimated 23 million eligible Californians will receive payments, totaling up to $1,050 for joint filers with at least one dependent, later this fall. The relief package will be paid for by a record-setting $97 billion state budget surplus.

I continue to be amazed at how many people there are, who are so damn stupid that they think that government does them a favor by stealing some of their money, and then giving them back some small scraps of what it has stolen from them.

The sliding scale is flawed.
Lower income earners get less than high income earners. It's like somehow the high earners drive more than the others do.

We only get 17 billion back after overpaying by 97 billion? How about the entire 97 billion governor stealsville?

Newsom is economically illiterate. Inflation is above 8% and still rising, and he's going to hand out $17 billion to the state's residents? Consumers have a high marginal propensity to consume windfalls of cash like that, especially lower-income consumers. Almost all the money will be spent freely, increasing aggregate demand and pushing up prices even higher.

And then there's the fact that this is an inequitable way to distribute a surplus. The wealthy and corporations most likely paid the majority of those taxes, and now those taxes are being returned to people who paid a much smaller share. I would call this a form of populist vote-buying at its worst.

Totally helps with that inflation thing. Hope landlords raise rents another $100 a month so they can pocket it all.

God I hope so.

Maybe a bunch of the goddamn Illegals that infested Florida will move to California to get all the freebies.

Got to love it. The governor of California is buying votes with part of the money that was taken from people. You really have to wonder. Why only a small portion?
Why buy votes with that money?
how long does he really expect that to last?
How many fools are going to fall for the scheme?

In other news, sales of crack cocaine, meth, and heroin are expected to rise dramatically in California soon.

Getting your own money back from overtaxation isn't "stimulus", dumbfuck.

Taking that narrative at face value, just for shits and grins. presumes that the overtaxation was a drag on the economy.

And after the bureaucrats take their cut, you're actually worse off.

So stuff that in your pipe and smoke it.

Just can’t win with you guys. California takes a balanced budget that generates a positive cash flow of almost $100M and you guys complain. Then they refund money back to taxpayers which is a republican dream… and you guys still complain. I’m starting to think you guys value partisanship over values and policy. No way, right?

They refunded the surplus back to the overtaxed citizens, after the State tax bureaucrats all got paid off, and ended up with less money than they would have had were they not overtaxed.

And assholes like you say that they should be grateful.

wow
