With every wave of new immigrants, it has been the same complaint, against the Irish, the Italians, the Chinese: we can't afford it, they are stealing our jobs! Yet in fact they've made our country stronger and grown our economy. And added to the cool customs and cultural elements they bring with them. To me, this is more of the same.

It wouldn't be that hard to solve the illegal immigration problem, really. Instead of focusing on the poor and powerless flooding the border, focus where we should, on employers who hire them. No jobs, no illegals.

We are not talking about every wave of new immigrants, and tired old crusty garbage does not change the realities of the facts.

When I asked a contractor using illegal immigrants about his business and what he pays them, he made a few things clear.

A: He pays them more than $15 and hour.
B; He uses them because they show up for work, work hard, don't cause problems, and weren't told they needed to get a college degree in kindergarten.
