Governor Whitmer signed House Bill 5503, creating a "tipline" to turn in gun owners for perceived violations of Michigan's firearm storage laws. HB 5503 is an omnibus education funding bill that was amended to include the "tipline" language and swiftly passed through the legislature within hours. The expedited pace and the silencing of opposition when the bill came up for a floor vote underscores the reality that this was a political move and another attack on gun owners.

House Bill 5503 allocates up to $1,000,000 to establish a tipline for students to anonymously report improperly stored firearms. The money is allocated for the 2024-2025 school year and will be made accessible to intermediate school districts. The bill also funds the creation and distribution of educational materials to students outlining the safe storage of firearms and how to report violations.

This "tipline" could result in unwarranted interactions with law enforcement and unfettered searches of homes, business, and other places where firearms could be stored.

Kids brainwashed to turn in their parents? Where have we seen this before in history?

Overload it with BS like the NJ tip line....Start with MI dem state legislators/congressmen.

I believe they shut that one down in NJ due to amount of shenanigans that were played. ;)

I looked for a more local article to see what they had to say and found this.

"As parents, we all want our kids to go to school and come home at the end of the day," and be able to focus on learning while they are there, Whitmer said. "But our kids are worried, and they know ... school shootings happen every day."

Whitmer signs bills to boost school safety, mental health support and literacy

No they do not.

And?

Storing guns unlocked and in area accessible to children appears to be more IMPORTANT than safety.

Why do you gun nuts dismiss safety of children?
You guys always claim that most gun owners are highly responsible, which I agree with, so what's the problem?

If a gun owner is being irresponsible and unsafe around children, wouldn't you support this situation being improved.

Kinder logic. Do you get a timeout when the criminal busts the door down. You are safe to be robbed and murdered

If it's important to you and something you feel important about, it's something you can convince people to support without lying about it.

School shootings do not happen every day.

Not surprised at all that liberal extremists are pushing the idea of anonymous snitching.
There are anonymous tip snitching lines for drunk drivers and spouse and child abuse.
Do you object to these^^^^ ?

That seems rather fascist and unconstitutional. I mean, what could go wrong with LEOs showing up at people's homes at 4AM banging on their doors demanding entry to search your house--- and all because someone phoned in a "tip" on them?

Too bad you're a jackass without a brain to realize the path to real gun safety is teaching children gun safety and discipline like we used to do for hundreds of years at an early age when guns never were a problem instead of expecting people to invest in expensive high tech gun safes and things which can be defeated and essentially lock guns away out of your reach when you most need them.

That is what the USSR used to do--- they had block snitches, and if they turned anyone in for, say, saying something against the gubmint, they got an extra loaf of bread to avoid starving.

LOL....I still got my NRA Safe Hunter patch from 1968 when the Game Warden would come in a teach the class.

Sigh, but that was back when the first day of deer season (rifle) was a school holiday.

And HS kids brought their rifles to school with them in their gun rack in the rear window of their PU truck.
Proof once again that the problem today aren't the guns which HAVE NOT CHANGED but the people who HAVE.
Progressivism promotes/teaches violence.
Every Trump shooter and every school shooter has been a progressive.

Most gun owners I have interacted with on this site keep loaded guns in unlocked locations.

That is highly irresponsible.

Back when guns were taken more seriously and viewed as tools, instead of as fashion and personality accessories and political statements.

How to deny reality. The Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland could believe six impossible things before breakfast.

Compared to you she's a rank amateur.

And I said that.
Geez, you guys can't accept facts.

That's what they want to them being able to defend yourself means they can't get equity.
