Important movement on Capitol Hill toward prioritizing mental health

We are in a mental health crisis right now, and it involves our kids

Congress has done mental health and substance use bills before, but covid really has lit a fire, and created additional need for action now...just get it done!

excerpts (more to come later):

Democrats, fearing their health care agenda is trapped in limbo, are pivoting to an issue they think will resonate with millions of Americans: cracking down on insurers who routinely deny mental health and addiction claims.

a new federal report shows health insurers regularly violate laws, refusing to pay for mental health and substance abuse services or making patients jump through hoops to get care

a bipartisan group in the House and Senate is pushing to draft a comprehensive bill by this summer that includes tougher enforcement on insurers that flout mental health parity rules

The insurance companies need to be forced to live up to their contracts with the insured and no more. If the government is going to force a business to add services not priced into their current model then the government must pay or allow the insurance companies to bill extra for it.

It's an interesting idea for insurance companies to provide those services and I'm certainly not against it but what about those who have no insurance? Does it make sense for local governments and charities to provide those services?

They had the opportunity to do this right under Obama but they let the insurance industry write their bill for them. I suppose one could argue that is not a reason to try and rectify this but I don't think many have much faith in them.

The criminal insurance companies own Congress.

Nothing of substance will happen.
