This is a city of 90,000 and 82% are hispanic!! Safe to assume they all lead lives of crime and welfare. How can a city this far north be taken over by hispanics?
dec 21 2025 Mass migration has caused one city in Massachusetts to resemble a foreign nation, as even its own mayor seems unable to speak or understand a word of English.

As The Eagle-Tribune reported, Lawrence Mayor Brian DePena testified earlier this month during a hearing in support of former acting police chief William Castro’s appeal against revoked credentials from a 2024 traffic incident. Video has now emerged showing that DePena demanded a translator during the hearing because his English is so pathetic. DePena’s native language is Spanish.
The judge denied DePena’s request to have his personal assistant act as his translator because he and others involved in the case were unable to speak Spanish. Too much could get lost in translation.

According to reports, an official interpreter was used instead.

If they can't speak your national language how are they allowed to run for office?

All of this is very strange to me...

Unlike Canada, the US has an official language on the federal level. However MA like many other states has no official language. Why is it strange to you? Canada has TWO official languages on the federal level and the official language of Quebec is French.

You will eventually have a mayor who only speaks Russian or Mandarin who have only been in the country for a year.

Not to worry, they will be loyal to America.
They still have to be elected. In this case, he is presiding over an overwhelmingly Hispanic community. The same could happen in Dearborn, Detroit and Minneapolis. I guess you don't have to worry about it in Canada, LOL, French nationals think Quebecois are morons re: their usage of the French language, i.e. Quebec stop signs. Arret? LMAO I had to laugh while touring the Canadian Rockies and seeing the bi-lingual federal sign for Lake Louise/Louise Lake.

Even stranger, how did he campaign for office? In Spanish?

It amazes me that in a nation of millions of laws, there somehow is no law yet to prevent some of the most basic, obvious, common sense things. For instance, if this dude can't speak English, it is a good bet he wasn't even born in this country.

If I went to China right now and ran for elected office of a city, speaking English, do you think I'd have any chance of being elected? Even getting on the ballot?

If I went to China I would be trying to learn Mandarin every day. Using apps to communicate, taking classes etc.

I don;t know how long this person has been in the U.S but it seems that politics is an open door to wealth. That is NOT the American from years gone by.

The Mayor of Philadelphia can't even spell her professional football teams name.

ELGLES!

There are 1.6 million in Philly

And then there's Trump

Donald Trump is known for frequent social media misspellings, including famous ones like "covfefe," "unpresidented," "smocking gun," and even misspelling his own name as "Donald Ttump," along with common errors like "councel" (council) and "hambergders," often seen as characteristic of his style but leading to significant media attention and ridicule. These typos range from simple typos to homophone swaps, often corrected later, with researchers tracking hundreds of errors during his presidency.

I remember when that happened. She wasn't even close. She is totally illiterate but the press gives her a pass.

I have no issue when someone speaking Spanish but they need to at least be basic conversational in English. How can they represent their constitutents otherwise?
This city is 82% hispanic so i guess the constituents speak spanish. The issue should be how does a city in northern USA get to be almost entirely hispanic.?

Commentary:
Hmm...., Thirty-six years in the US and he still doesn't speak English adequately? speaking of a failure to assimilate. This makes him eminently qualified to be a Massachusetts Democrat leader.
Just another city in America similar Dearborn, MI. and Columbus Oh that's 80% Muslim.
Hispanics in Lawrence MA they want their own Latino lifestyles and communities. Gosh, that is what they left to come to America. If he has children probably adults now, I sure hope they assimilated into American culture. Me-thinks not in an 80% Spanish speaking city.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed February 2, 1848, formally ended the Mexican-American War, ceding over half of Mexico's territory to the United States, including present-day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. It established the Rio Grande as the border, granted U.S. citizenship with property/rights protections to Mexicans in the ceded lands, and resulted in the U.S. paying Mexico $15 million, dramatically expanding American territory to the Pacific (the Mexican Cession).
We all know that Mexico wants the land back.
Though a cultural idea of "reconquista" persists, representing a desire for the Southwestern U.S. to be politically or culturally re-integrated with Mexico, fueled by historical ties and demographic shifts. Californios (Mexican residents) resisted American forces, even winning some battles like the Siege of Los Angeles, but were ultimately defeated, leading to the loss of Alta California to the U.S.
That is why Californians are resisting the actions of Border Patrol and ICE..

Deport.
If you can't be bothered to at least learn the national language you don't belong in this country.
Period.
Why should people have to learn the language of invaders, which is what I suspect you mean by 'national language'?

So, is it the case a person speaking only the French official language can not be elected to government in Canada?
