N-95 masks were designed for the infected person, to stop the virus from getting out. Use as a protective measure was started by the US military in lab situations not to be used under heavy exertion as it can cause hypoxia and metabolic acidosis in healthy adults. Most people do not understand the complexity of the problems and thus have a false sense of security when wearing them.
