The colonists were basically starving. They held meetings and decided to share all the food brought by survivors on an equal basis.
There was no Marxism, and since Karl Marx invented Communism, which requires a rather large number of laborers willing to kill off business owners, I'm wondering why anyone would call the unfortunate pilgrims "communists." Because they decided to share and share alike due to the presence of death, which would give them a leg up on surviving the wild and untamed land in and around Pilgrim Rock, Massachusetts.
There is the likelihood the gift of turkeys, wild cranberries, pumpkins, and assorted primitive vegetable crops arrived from concerned native American tribes who were horrified to see other human beings starving out of their ignorance of available food resources, so the Native Americans, come what may, gathered all they could to keep the pale faces that were dying in droves alive until they learned the ways of the new land.
In order to make Communism work, history shows that Communists start out by killing their opponents. Since nature was so adept at killing off the newcomers, even their rivals who lived in tribes were unwilling to kill the dying passengers because they needed help, not more death. God bless the Native Americans who supported the survivors of the voyage that wound up with a 50% death toll. And God bless the America, its citizens, its founders, and the government that was formed with guarantees that people would be cared for and served by colonial leaders who sought freedom from tyranny as their first cause for protecting their fellow citizens in the mid eighteenth century and after.
