This young man seems to have crossed the line — not out of any deep commitment to stop spying on civilians (like Snowden), or to expose details of bloody U.S. imperialist wars overseas (like Assange & Manning) — but just to impress his little group of friends in an internet chat group!
The group itself has been described this way:

U.S. arrests 21-year-old National Guardsman for online intelligence leaks
The FBI on Thursday arrested Jack Douglas Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the U.S. Air National Guard, over the leaks online of classified documents that embarrassed Washington with allies around the world.www.reuters.com
Of course the NYTimes and Washington Post have their own agendas, so it is surely too early to draw any certain conclusions about Teixeira’s motivations. But let this at least serve as warning to any who think that the law & national security norms don’t apply to them … just because they think they are “real Americans” and “patriots.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is questioning the treatment of the suspect who was arrested Thursday in connection with the leak of highly sensitive classified documents.
Jack Douglas Teixeira, a 21-year-old Massachusetts Air National Guard member, was arrested by federal agents Thursday, Attorney General Merrick Garland said in anews release.
Greene said the leaks reveal the presence of U.S. troops in Ukraine, and compared Teixeira to Stuart Scheller, who was discharged after posting statements on social media critical of top military leaders over the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal.
ABC News reports that a small special operations unit is working out of the embassy in Ukraine in a non-combat role.
“We have now found out from a supposed 21-year-old National Guardsman that there are American military troops on the ground in Ukraine,” Greene tweeted.
The far-right congresswoman from Georgia lamented that Teixeira is being treated as a “traitor and criminal” and credits him for “exposing the truth."
“The National Guardsman that released these Pentagon papers is simply blowing the whistle on what is really taking place at the DOD, yet he’s being treated like a traitor and criminal,” Greene said.

Snowden did what he did to expose the lies of the government. It would seem this guy exposed what the government is not telling us.
The government is wrong in both cases. We should be able to trust the government. I understand that idea is now a punchline but our government is as corrupt as any.
The government will always have secrets. Sometimes these are secrets they don't want others to know for a good reason.
Someone who exposes those secrets will be called a hero by those who want to expose what the government is doing in secret, and treasonous by those who think these secrets should remain hidden.
Here's the problem. Secrets from China are very, very, VERY difficult to get at. If the west is to survive in its current state, it has to be able to protect itself.
You won't be able to trust a government that is formed from FPTP elections. Because you don't vote for what you want, you vote for what's there, and it's corrupt and controlled by the rich...
Well yeah, it's not about protecting the interests of the country, it's about protecting corporate interests.
So what are you going to do about it? How do you take that power away from the corporate giants and huge money?
