I am a convert to Islam of several years. So I talk about these issues sometimes when I go to the Mosque. There are people there from most all of the Islamic countries. They know what's really going on in the Middle East.

Also, my wife speaks Arabic. We get Arabic channels on the TV by satelite. Plus, much of info I get is on the BBC

American news is very lame and so people here get very little real world news.

American news is about Brittny, Paris, Lindsey. the Emmeys, Oscars, and other mind numbing trivia.

I am well aware of the kind of things that actually go on in a combat area.

And yet in this case he OUTRIGHT lied. He claimed he was briefed and that he had the facts. The Commandant DENIED briefing him and as we can see he had NONE of the facts.

Murtha made the claims he made for POLITICAL reasons. He wanted to attack the President so he simply fabricated outrage and lied about what happened.

The reason none of the charges so far have stuck is because they were fabrications of a fevered press and a bunch of rear area lawyers in the military.

At least one 2 Star General offered to testify in defense of the Marines.

The sad bottom line of this one is that Murtha screwed the pooch big time. He prejudged these men before hearing all of the facts. He declared them guilty without a trial and tried to have them hanged in the court of public opinion. For this he should be ashamed of himself and shamed by his constituents.

Unfortunately, Murtha decided he couldn't do something as simple and decent as apologizing. Even an apology that included something like what Sunni Man, said - for example, "I know what can happen in a combat zone and I have seen what can happen to young men under the intense pressure and stress these men are under...based on this and the facts that I had, I prejudged the situation and these fine, young men. For this I am deeply ashamed, and I ask them for their forgiveness. Every American has the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty...and this is a good lesson for all of us, myself most of all, as to what that is so important in these difficult times."

I think that these Marines would have forgiven him if he had simply had the moral backbone to admit that he had done something wrong...but instead he cowered away and hid from the questions anytime anyone asked him about it. I hope that these soldiers get the closure and answers they need with this law suit...and I hope Murtha gets whats coming to him - because what he did (not prejudging the situation, that was a terrible mistake, but we've all done that...but not apologizing for his remarks and how they affected these Marines lives) was despicable.
