USSR considered preemptive nuke strike after Chinese attacks along border. The Nixon admin told Russia the US would not be neutral if Russia did this. Led to Kissinger visit in 1971 and Nixon visit in 1972 to China. As much as I would have not minded two brutal communist dictatorships killing off each other the collateral effect of such a war would not be good.

It would have turned into a world war. India would have been dragged in, as would most of Asia and the ME.

Wasn't the first time, either.

We also had the Cuban missile crisis that year as well.

The Myth of the Monolith

Russian and Chinese Communists were at each others throats from as early as 1924.
